Pictures from the last Seattle blow-out party:
(text below explains...)
Mowhawks!!!
Wigs and such...
Well, you get the idea: wigs, shaved heads, dogs with big sunglasses. Outrageous!!!
Perhaps a little background is needed here, eh? Why the heck did Matt and Jen move to Soldotna, Alaska in the first place?
Well, in March of 2007 Matt was in his second year of residency and was given the opportunity to go up to Soldotna for a month to work at the local hospital/clinic. As many of you know, Matt has what we could call a slight penchant for mountains, snow, and all things ice-covered. So, of course, he fell in love with the place. The doctors at the clinic are never lacking in work and always lacking in people to do the work, so Matt was schmoozed, Alaskan-style, and was told a job was waiting for him if he was so inclined.
He was, indeed, so inclined.
The next step was to find Jen a job....again, there is no lack of social work need in these parts (like everywhere else), so after a little while Jen landed a job at a hospice agency.
And then there was the small task of actually getting to Alaska....with all of our stuff, and Shasta. Oh, and the other small task of deciding to leave all of our friends and our lives in Seattle after being there for eleven years.
As far as the logistics of the move: the clinic had a furnished apartment ready and waiting- I'm telling you, schmoozed, Alaskan-style! The rest of our stuff was piled into Matt's 1993 Saturn. Miss Shasta stretched out in the backseat, and off we went! (details on how that went to follow!)
As far as the part about leaving Seattle? Well, we had a big party to celebrate. It helped ease the sadness, but of course leaving a place and friends we love was very hard. At times it felt impossible, to be honest. We miss everyone like crazy, but I guess that is the price one pays for having an undeniable need to seek adventure!
The party in Seattle had a dual purpose: to celebrate Matt's end of residency, and to say goodbye to life in Seattle, at least for a while. It was a pretty good time. You know you've had a good party when a few people leave with mohawks....the pictures above tell all. (Noel, I spared you!)
